Subject: Creating an environment for Nexus
As Nexus-Chicago is starting to come together, I'm starting to spend my time
thinking about how we could set up the environment there, and this isn't
trivial. Dave & I have spoken about setting up a MUD or MOO that could
possibly give users a feeling of *being* somewhere...and if we design the
place with the right mind and with a heavy dose of fun, we can make a
wonderful fun place to be. First of all, and most importantly, we have to
realize that we are *NOT* creating an environment for *ourselves*. If we
don't create a place where *we* enjoy hanging out then we cannot expect others
to enjoy it. Our goal should be to create someplace fun, not to hold newbies
hands through the hard & cold virtual world. If we create someplace truly
fun, people will surely *want* to learn how to use the interface.
Some ideas that I've been throwing around in my head...and I'm very much
interested in comments *and* criticism *and* better ideas.
* It would be neat if people in the virtual MOO could go to a terminal and
log back into the MOO, recursively creating duplicates of themselves. :-)
* I think it would be a *won*der*ful idea to figure out how to create a space
for raving... I know that there is a MOO dedicated to raving, but that's now
what I'm talking about...I'm talking about a rave "room". Perhaps several
rooms where people could virtually dance & socialize. Raving could be
simulated by random poetry being displayed to anybody in a "rave" room. In
the trace room, the poetry would be etherial. In the hardcore room the
poetry would be like gibberish and it could be a little much, so it's hard
to talk to people over the *noise*. Get the idea?
* A business district, so interested businesses could set up offices. I take
yoga classes with the people who own Space Time tanks in Chicago, a place
that specializes in sensory deprevation...imagine the virtual counterpart of
their business, for example. Futureculture could perhaps set up an office
where people could look at a catalog of their items for sale and set up
orders.
* A neighborhood of houses that people can buy with virtual cash, can comission
programmers to build, and we will develop for them the virtual home of their
dreams where they can hang out and impress people.
* Rather than identify people by their login id, people can choose their
handles.
* Meeting rooms where people & organizations can hold virtual meetings.
* An area for spirtiual development, where people could go and meditate or
speak virtual Aums. Perhaps various churches, spiritual people, new age
groups, or the like could be interested in setting up classes or services
over the net.
* Ways to easily enter tools like irc, gopher, archie, mailtool without having
to ever touch c-shell. Certainly c-shell would be an option for those
who are interested, but it would be just that, an option.
I'd like to encourage people to be creative, and nothing is to silly to *not*
suggest...
Much love,
yippi

P.S. Darin...this is the work that I'm talking about when I speak of
"development" Does that help flesh out my meaning.
